Izumizaki [village] - Izumizaki

Japanese: 泉崎[村] - いずみざき
Izumizaki [village] - Izumizaki
A village in Nishishirakawa District, southwest of Fukushima Prefecture. Population 6,924 (1995). Adjacent to Shirakawa City, the Abukuma River runs through the south and the Izumi River runs through the center. The western half of the village is made up of hills including Karasu Pass, and settlements are distributed on the plateau in the eastern half. Paddy fields are developed along the Izumi River and Abukuma River, and livestock, tobacco leaves, and vegetables are cultivated. In 1896, Izumizaki Station on the Tohoku Main Line was established, and Izumizaki became the central settlement. It was previously a purely agricultural village, but the population has changed from declining to increasing due to the attraction of businesses. It has been an open area since ancient times, with many ruins and ancient tombs from the Jomon to Yayoi periods. To the east of Izumizaki Station is the Izumizaki Yokoana Kofun (history) with its vermilion murals, the Sekiwagu Ruins, thought to be the remains of an ancient Shirakawa District Office, on the north bank of the Abukuma River in the south, and the Kannonyama Cliff-carved Memorial Stupas at the footpath along the Tohoku Expressway passing through the north.
