A synod of Russian Orthodox bishops held in Moscow in 1551 as part of the government reform efforts of Russian Tsar Ivan IV. It is called the Stoglav (100 Chapters) Synod because its resolutions were compiled into 100 chapters. At the time, the Russian Orthodox Church had been isolated for many years, and as a result, there were noticeable differences in church practice with other Eastern Orthodox churches, errors in liturgical texts were ignored, and discipline among the clergy was lax. Furthermore, the expansion of church property and monastic estates was becoming a major obstacle to the rulers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
