This arch is located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées in Paris, the capital of France, at Place Charles de Gaulle. Construction began in 1806, the year after Napoleon Bonaparte's victory over the Austrian-Russian allied forces at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, at Napoleon's command, and was completed 30 years later in 1836. ◇It is 50m high and 45m wide, and the walls feature reliefs depicting battles by Napoleon's army. Beneath the arch is the tomb of an unknown soldier who died in World War I. You can go up to the roof by elevator or stairs. When people talk about the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, they generally mean this one, but there are many other Arcs de Triomphe in Paris, such as the Porte du Carrousel, the Porte Saint-Denis, and the Porte Saint-Martin. For this reason, it is often called the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile. Its official name is the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile. Source: Kodansha World Tourist Attractions Encyclopedia Information |
