After serving as an apprentice to a textile merchant in London for three years from 1438, he moved to Bruges in Flanders, where he gained fame and wealth as a textile merchant. He also devoted himself to translating literary works, and stayed in Cologne from 1471 to 1472 to learn printing. In 1474, he set up a printing press in Bruges and published his own translation of The Chess Manual and other works. In 1476, he returned to England, set up a printing press in Westminster, and, with the patronage of the court and aristocracy, published about 100 books, including Dictes and Sayenges of the Phylosophers (1477), the encyclopedia The Myrrour of the worlde (81), and Canterbury Tales.
