Hagen - Hagen (English spelling)

An industrial city in North Rhine-Westphalia, western Germany. Population 203,200 (2000). Located about 20 km south of Dortmund, on the northern edge of the Rhine Slate Mountains, at the confluence of tributaries on the left bank of the middle Ruhr River, it is a hub of north-south and east-west transport routes along the valley. It is a city on the southeastern edge of the Ruhr industrial area, with important industries being steel, light metals, storage batteries, paper, and confectionery, and it also has the Mark Regional Power Station. It was a small settlement until the end of the Middle Ages, but in the 17th century it became part of Prussia, and iron processing developed due to its mercantilism, and it became a city in 1746. Since the second half of the 19th century, with the development of the Ruhr industrial area, many factories have gathered here and it has also become a transportation hub. It was damaged during the Second World War, but in the process of postwar reconstruction, the disorderly development of the city center, the improvement of cultural and social facilities, and the construction of new parks have progressed.
