Mountaineering equipment. Abbreviation of the German Mauerhaken. A steel nail with a hole in the head that is hammered into a crack in rocks where there are no handholds, and a carabiner is attached to pass a rope through it, or it can be used as a foothold or handhold. Particularly long ice pitons are used on ice walls. Along with carabiners and hammers, it is one of the three main tools in rock climbing.

登山用具。ドイツ語Mauerhakenの略。頭部に穴のある鋼鉄製の釘で,手がかりのない岩場などでリス(岩の割れ目)にハンマーで打ち込み,カラビナをかけてザイルなどを通したり,足場や手がかりともする。氷壁には特に長いアイスハーケンを用いる。カラビナ,ハンマーとともに岩登り(ロッククライミング)の三大道具の一つ。
