1877‐1919 Austrian psychoanalyst. One of S. Freud's early disciples, he contributed to the integration of psychoanalysis and psychopathology, and to the psychoanalytic study of psychosis. He was also the first to introduce the concepts of identity and ego boundaries into the field of psychoanalysis. His major work was The Influence Machine in Schizophrenia (1919). Later, he became emotionally entangled with Freud, who was uncomfortable with his intellectual ambition and claims to originality. After a relationship with the idiosyncratic female writer Salome (Andreas-Salome), he committed suicide eight days before his wedding to his fiancée.
