German film. Directed by Fritz Lang, known as a masterpiece of supernatural detective films, it has two silent films and two talkies (a sequel and a remake). The first was made in 1922, released in Japan under the title "Doctor Mabuse" and originally titled "Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler (Dr. Mabuse the Gambler)" and is considered one of the masterpieces of Expressionist cinema. The original version was screened on two consecutive nights in two parts, "The Great Gambler - Representations of an Era" and "Hell - People of an Era."

ドイツ映画。怪奇探偵映画の傑作として知られるフリッツ･ラング監督作品で，サイレント作品とトーキー作品2本(続編およびリメーク)がある。最初の作品は1922年製作，日本公開題名は《ドクトル･マブゼ》，原題は《Dr.Mabuse,der Spieler(賭博者マブゼ博士)》で，表現主義映画の代表作の一つに数えられている。オリジナル版は，〈偉大な賭博者――ある時代の表象〉と〈地獄――ある時代の人びと〉の二部構成で，二夜連続で上映された。
