[Born] Around 2144 B.C. Died c. 2124 BC. Ruler of Lagash in Sumer. Ruled Lagash under the Sumerian kings of the 3rd Dynasty of Ur. Built its golden age and promoted trade, culture, and the arts. About 30 statues of Gudea discovered during excavations in Lagash are masterpieces of stone carving at the time, and the inscriptions on them are said to be in classical Sumerian.
