A private zoo opened in 1907 in Stellingen, a suburb of Hamburg, by C. Hagenbeck (1844-1913), a German animal dealer who was also world-famous as a trainer. He avoided confining animals in wire cages or fences whenever possible, and instead adopted a new format that used moats and ditches to allow animals to be raised and observed in a state close to their natural state. In addition to raising and exhibiting animals, the zoo has also served as a center for collecting and supplying animals from around the world. Its area exceeds 200,000 m2 .
