836‐901 A Sabian scholar from Harran in southeastern Turkey. Fluent in Greek, Syriac, and Arabic, his talent was recognized and he was involved in translating Greek scientific books into Arabic in Baghdad. As a translator, he is considered on a par with Hunain bin Ishaq, and built the foundation for the subsequent development of Arabic science. His achievements were not limited to translations; he also wrote annotations for works such as the Almagest, and conducted original research in the fields of mathematics and astronomy.
