A Sabian scholar from Harran in southeastern Turkey. Fluent in Greek, Syriac, and Arabic, his talent was recognized and he was involved in translating Greek scientific books into Arabic in Baghdad. As a translator, he is considered on a par with Hunain bin Ishaq, and built the foundation for the subsequent development of Arabic science. His achievements were not limited to translations; he also wrote annotations for works such as the Almagest, and conducted original research in the fields of mathematics and astronomy. Some of his astronomical works were translated into Latin in the 12th century and became known in the Latin world of Western Europe.

トルコ南東部ハラーン出身のサービア教徒学者。ギリシア語，シリア語，アラビア語に堪能で，その才能を認められバグダードでギリシア科学書のアラビア語への翻訳活動に携わった。翻訳家としてフナイン･ブン･イスハークと並び称され，それ以後のアラビア科学展開の礎を築いた。その業績は翻訳のみにとどまらず，《アルマゲスト》等への注釈，さらに数学，天文学の分野で独創的な研究を行った。天文学の著作の一部は12世紀にラテン語訳され，西欧ラテン世界でも知れわたった。
