Nykoping is the largest city on the island of Falster, Denmark, facing the Guldborgsund strait on the west coast. It has a population of 25,000 (1990). The Frederik IX Bridge spans the strait, connecting the island of Lolland, and a ferry runs from Rødbyhavn on Lolland to Puttgarden in Germany, making Nykoping a key location on the railway connecting Northern Europe and Germany. The city originated from a fortress built in the 12th century (later known as Nykoping Castle), and is an old commercial center that gained market rights in the early 13th century.
