According to Greek mythology, the crocus is said to be the flower into which the beautiful young man Krokos, who died in love with the nymph Smilax, transformed, or the flower that grew from the blood of Prometheus, who was bound to Mount Caucasus. The Romans sprinkled it in bathtubs, beds, and banquets to enjoy its scent, but at that time it was apparently the name for saffron.
