This coastal shrimp belongs to the family Penaeidae and is found in abundance in inland bays throughout Japan. It is particularly common in Tokyo Bay, Ise Bay, the Seto Inland Sea, and the Ariake Sea, where its main fishing grounds are sandy and muddy bottoms less than 50 meters deep. It can reach a body length of 12 cm, but males are slightly smaller, usually at around 10 cm. It is bluish gray in color, with a slightly yellowish ventral surface. The carapace is thick and covered with coarse hairs. The rostrum is well developed, with 6 to 8 spines on the upper edge. In individuals with a body length of 5.5 cm or more, the tip of the rostrum is curved upwards considerably. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
