Bhagelkhand

Japanese: バゲールカンド（英語表記）Bhagelkhand

The name of a region in northern India, spanning the southeastern tip of Uttar Pradesh and the northern tip of Madhya Pradesh. The name comes from the Baghela clan of Rajput tribes who settled here in the 13th century. It is located in the upper reaches of the Son River system, and occupies a transitional zone from the plains along the Yamuna River to the Kaimur Mountains and the Deccan Plateau. The terrain is mountainous, consisting of the Deccan Plateau foreland, which rises in a stepped manner to an elevation of less than 600m, and the dissected basins between them. Originally covered with forests and inhabited by non-Hindus tribal people, the area became Hinduized in the 17th and 18th centuries as agricultural settlements advanced from the north.

インド北部，ウッタル･プラデーシュ州南東端とマディヤ･プラデーシュ州北端部にまたがる地方名。地名は13世紀にここに定着したラージプート族のバゲーラ氏族に由来する。ほぼソーン川水系の上流域にあたり，ヤムナー川沿いの平原からカイムール山脈を経てデカン高原へ至る漸移地帯を占める。地形は山がちで，標高600m以下の階段状に高まっていくデカン高原の前山とその間の開析された盆地群からなる。もとは森林に覆われ，非ヒンドゥー教徒の部族民の居住地帯であったが，17～18世紀に北方から農業入植が進みヒンドゥー化された。
