A group of large scavenging birds in Eurasia and Africa within the family Accipitridae, including 6 genera and 15 species. New World condors such as the great condor and California condor are similar in morphology and lifestyle to these birds, but are more distantly related taxonomically and are classified as part of the family Condoridae. They weigh 1.5-7 kg, have a wingspan of 1.5-2.7 m, and have long necks. Many species lack feathers on their heads and necks, leaving the skin exposed. They use rising air currents to soar for long periods of time, and when they find the carcass of a large animal, they descend to the ground to eat.
