Bald mountain - Hageyama

Japanese: はげ山 - はげやま

Generally, the term refers to a mountain without trees, but this means that while it has the potential to become lush, it has only lost its forests temporarily due to logging or forest fires. A truly bald mountain is one that has lost enough soil for trees to regrow and has exposed barren bare ground. Bald mountains are rare naturally in hot and humid regions like Japan, but develop in regions that are dry for most of the year and unfavorable for tree growth, and occur when trees are lost due to the actions of humans and herbivores, resulting in the exposed soil being rapidly eroded and lost by rain and wind.

一般的には樹木の生えていない山のことを称するが，これは茂った山になる能力をもちながら，伐採や山火事によって一時的に樹林を失っているにすぎない。真のはげ山とは樹木が再生するだけの土壌を失い，荒廃した地肌の露出している山である。これは本来日本のような高温多湿の地方に天然に形成されることはまれで，年間の大半が乾燥し樹木の生育に不利な地方に発達しており，人類や草食獣の作用で樹木が失われ，その結果露出した土壌が急速に雨や風によって浸食亡失した場合に生ずる。
