The word comes from the witch masco in Provence, France, and refers to a person or thing that is thought to bring good luck or fortune, a god of fortune, or other auspicious things. It was popularized by the French composer Audran's operetta La Mascotte (1880). In the West, stuffed rabbit's feet are highly valued as auspicious, and sailors have the custom of tattooing anchors or human skulls on their arms or chests to prevent accidents at sea, and cowboys in the Americas wear horseshoes to ward off misfortune. In Japan, they are most commonly used as talismans at shrines and temples, and there are countless mascots, such as those attached to cars to protect against traffic accidents and those wearing protective deities related to the year of birth. In a strange twist, it is said that if a gambler holds a fragment of the gravestone of a famous Edo period gangster, Jirocho Shimizu, or a famous thief, Jirokichi Nezumi Kozo, it will bring them good luck. There are also some cases where companies have made products out of gravestones, such as mascot dolls.
