This is an occupational disease that occurs when vibrations from hand-held power tools such as jackhammers, riveters, chipping hammers, grinders, and chainsaws are transmitted to the hands and arms. It can also be caused by the vibrations of the handlebars of tractors, bulldozers, and motorcycles traveling on rough roads. It was first described by G. Loriga (1911) of Italy in a description of stone quarry workers who used jackhammers. Characteristic symptoms appear several years after starting to use the tools, and include numbness and pain in the hands and arms, and cold hands.
