An Islamic dynasty (800-909) that ruled North Africa, mainly in present-day Tunisia. Its capital was Kairawan. The Abbasid amir Ibrahim (reigned 800-812) was granted autonomy by the caliph Harun al-Rashid on condition that he paid tribute, and established a semi-independent dynasty. Ziyadat Allah I (reigned 817-838) invaded Sicily and gained control of the Mediterranean Sea, and Ibrahim II (reigned 875-902) completely conquered Sicily in 878, bringing Islamic culture to the island.
