Bakuro - Bakuro

Japanese: 博労 - ばくろう

Also written as Hakuraku or Bakuro. A middleman for cattle and horses. Hakuraku is said to be an expert in horse appraisal in ancient China, and also the name of the star that protects horses. By extension, it was used to refer to a person who traveled around villages to buy cattle and horses from farmers and then sold them at cattle and horse markets in various places. Before the widespread use of veterinarians, the character Hakuraku was also used to refer to a person whose job was to bleed and treat horses or treat cattle, but in this case they were called "hakuraku." Both types of people require excellent skills in horse physiognomy appraisal, and it seems that originally both were performed at the same time, so the distinction between them is extremely unclear.

伯楽または馬喰とも書く。牛馬の仲買人。伯楽は古代中国の馬の鑑定の達人とも，また馬を守護する星の名ともされ，転じて村々を回って農家から牛馬を買い集め，各地の牛馬市などでこれを売りさばく者をさして呼んだ。また，獣医の普及以前，馬の血取りや治療，あるいは牛の治療などを業とした者にも伯楽の字があてられたが，この場合は「はくらく」と呼ばれた。両者とも馬相鑑定の技術にすぐれていることが必要で，もともと両者は兼ね行われたらしく，その分化はきわめて曖昧である。
