A major German retail group. Founded in 1920 by the merger of C. Karlstadt, a manufacturer and retailer of towels and clothing, and Arthof, a manufacturer of haberdashery, calico, and woolen goods. In 1929, Europe's largest department store opened in Berlin. After World War II, self-service food sections were installed in department stores. In 1963, the store names were unified to Karlstadt. In 1976, the company acquired a stake in Neckermann, a major mail-order store. In 1984, it established Rad & Tart Technical Services. In 1991, it acquired CENTRUM Warrenhaus and expanded into the former East Germany. In addition to the department stores Karlstadt (188 stores) and HERTIE (35 stores), it has 175 stores in five specialty stores, 67 Neckermann chain stores, and 51 restaurants. It also operates a mail-order business in 10 European countries, and has approximately 600 agencies in the travel sector. Annual sales: 26,527 million marks, total assets: 11,463 million marks, number of employees: 94,463 (1997).

ドイツの小売グループ大手。 1920年タオル・衣料品製造販売の C.カールシュタットと，小間物・キャラコ・毛織物のアルソフが合併し，設立。 29年ベルリンにヨーロッパ最大の百貨店を開店。第2次世界大戦後，セルフサービスの食品売場を百貨店内に設置。 63年店名をカールシュタットに統一。 76年通信販売店の大手ネッカーマンに資本参加。 84年ラート・ウント・タート技術サービス設立。 91年 CENTRUM・ウォレンハウスを買収し，旧東ドイツに進出。デパートのカールシュタット 188店，HERTIE35店のほか，専門店5系列 175店，Neckermannチェーン 67店，レストラン 51店などを擁する。さらにヨーロッパ 10ヵ国で通信販売事業を展開し，旅行部門では代理店約 600店をもつ。年間売上高 265億 2700万マルク，総資産 114億 6300万マルク，従業員数9万 4463名 (1997) 。
