Soviet poet. His real name was Dzyubin. He was born in Odessa to a Jewish craftsman. He studied at the Surveying Technical School and began publishing poetry in 1915. With the October Revolution, he joined the partisan unit in 1919. He later joined the Southern Rosta news agency and continued to write revolutionary and romantic works. In 1925, he moved to Moscow. His epic poem "Opanas's Song" (1926) is about Ukrainian peasants killed by tragic fate in the revolutionary war, and inherits and develops the form of traditional "duma" (narrative song) and the ancient Russian "Tale of Igor's Campaign." His first collection of poems, "Southwest" (1928), and his second collection of poems, "The Victors" (1932), sing of historical periods such as the NEP (First Five-Year Plan) and the succession of the revolution, with the poet's unique passion and empathy.
