A perennial plant of the orchid family. It grows in mountain grasslands from southern Hokkaido to central Honshu. The underground stem is short and horizontal, while the aboveground stem is erect and about 40 cm tall. The leaves are oblong, 8-20 cm long and 5-8 cm wide, with a short sheath at the base that encases the stem. In April and May, small bracts grow at the top of the stem, and at the end of the bracts a single large red-purple to pale pink flower opens, facing downward. The flower is about 5 cm in diameter and has a pouch-shaped lip. The Japanese name comes from the resemblance of the flower shape to the mother's robe worn by Taira no Atsumori, and is in contrast to the closely related Kumagaisou (Kumagaiso). Due to concerns about extinction due to theft, it was designated a rare domestic wild plant and animal species in 1997. A closely related species, C. guttatum , grows under the forests of the mountainous areas of central Honshu. It produces beautiful pale yellow flowers with brown spots in June and July. The species is also distributed in the cool temperate zones of eastern Asia and northwestern North America.
