Abbreviation: TWA. Has 100 routes within the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and Central America. Founded in 1925 as Western Air Express. Changed name to Trans World Airlines in 1950. Acquired Hilton International, the overseas hotel management division of Hilton Hotels in 1967 (sold in 1987), but later fell into financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy under the Federal Bankruptcy Code in 1992, completing restructuring in August 1995. Acquired by American Airlines in 2001.
