Honmyoji Temple

This is a Nichiren sect temple in Hanazono, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto City. It is called Hatsuseizan. The principal image is the sect founder Tenjo Dai Mandala. In 1585 (Tensho 13), Kato Kiyomasa invited Nisshin to build the temple in Osaka to pray for the repose of his father Kiyotada's soul. When Kiyomasa took control of Higo, the temple's land was moved to Kumamoto Castle, and after his death, it was moved to its current location, becoming Kiyomasa's temple of worship and the head temple of the Nichiren sect Rokujo school in Kyushu. In addition to the main hall, the temple grounds also include the Kato Kiyomasa Mausoleum, also known as Jochi Mausoleum after Kiyomasa's Buddhist name. Among the temple treasures, the short sword donated by Hosokawa Nari Shige and the two volumes of "Nihonki Kyoen Waka" (Chronicles of Japan: Banquet) by Prince Munetaka are designated as important cultural properties of the country. In addition, three items, a sword (inscribed Kyushu Higo Dodanuki Fujiwara Masakuni), a short sword (inscribed Bizen Osafune Sukesada), and a Kiyomasa-style net sheath, are designated as important cultural properties of the prefecture.
