Ivy Compton-Burnett
1892‐1969
British female novelist. Born in London, her father was a famous doctor, her mother a second wife, and she grew up in a gloomy household where two sisters even committed suicide together. She studied classics at the University of London. She first attracted attention with her second novel, Masters and Lords (1925), which came out 14 years after her debut novel, Dolores (1911), and established her reputation with Husbands and Wives (1931), Sons and Daughters (1937), and Servants and Maids (1947), and continued to publish works until she was in her 70s. All of her works are based on middle- and upper-class family life in the so-called Edwardian era from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, and depict the crimes and evils of oppressive patriarchs, such as murder, adultery, and theft, which are wrought within family members through their desire to dominate and their malice. These works are told in a comical manner through witty dialogue, without any specific locations or the faces of the protagonists being identified, but at the heart of them lies terrible pain and terror.
