A hunter-fisher people living in the left bank of the middle reaches of the Yenisei River in Western Siberia, Russian Federation. Formerly called Ostyako-Samoed. Population 3,600 (1989). The Serikhops were once based further south in the middle reaches of the Ob River, but after some of them moved to their current home in the 17th century, their home town of Serikhop became heavily Russified. Serikhop is the only surviving language representing the southern group of the Samoyed branch of the Uralic language family. Culturally, the Serikhops are closer to the Khanty and Ket peoples who also live in the inland river basin than to the Samoyed peoples of the northern group, and for this reason these three groups were once collectively called Ostyak.
