The Convention on the Laws and Customs of War on Land, adopted at the Hague Peace Conference in 1899 and revised at the second Hague Peace Conference in 1907, requires that the contracting nations issue instructions to their armies to comply with the Regulations on the Laws and Customs of War on Land, which are attached to the treaty. The Regulations codify the laws of war at the time, and include 56 articles on belligerency, prisoners of war, restrictions on the means of harming the enemy, espionage, military envoys, surrender treaties, armistices, occupation, etc. They are considered to be applicable not only to land warfare but to war in general.
