Concepción (English spelling)

Japanese: コンセプシオン(英語表記)Concepción
Concepción (English spelling)
Its official name is Concepción de la Madre Santísima de la Luz. It is a city in south-central Chile. It is located about 450 km south-southwest of the capital Santiago, about 10 km upstream on the coast of the Biobío River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean. It was founded by the Spaniards in 1550 at the site of what is now Penco, about 10 km north-northeast of the Gulf of Concepción, but it was damaged by two conflicts with the Indians and repeated earthquakes, especially the earthquakes in 1730 and 1751, which were accompanied by tsunamis, and it was moved to its current location along the Biobío River, a little inland, in 1754. The city developed as a commercial center because the river was an important transportation route connecting the Pacific coast with the fertile agricultural areas inland. Today, the city has its outer port at Talcahuano, a good natural harbor in the north-northwest, and Chile's largest coalfield to the south. Blessed with hydroelectric power from the Biobío River, the city and its suburbs have developed as an industrial area. In addition to industries such as food, textiles, leather products, and beer, heavy chemical industries such as steel, oil refining, and chemicals have developed in recent years. It is also a cultural center, with higher education institutions such as the University of Concepción (1919). Most of the city was rebuilt after the 1939 earthquake, and there are many modern buildings. The city is connected by rail and road to the Pan-American Highway and the Trans-Chilean Railway, and there is also a railroad to nearby coal-mining centers such as Coronel and Rota. Population: 306,464 (1992 estimate).
