A Greek writer and orator during the Roman Empire from 117 or 129-181 onwards. He studied rhetoric under Herodes Atticus and others, and wrote and gave speeches in Asia Minor. His representative work, the Ode to Rome, praises the ingenuity of the Roman Empire's ruling structure from the standpoint of the provincial people, while the Sacred Logos records a prophecy from Asclepius, the god of healing, whom he visited, and conveys one aspect of the medical science of the time. His other works, such as the Athenian Hymn and Rhetoric, are both important works for understanding the society of the time, and were avidly read even during the Byzantine period.
