A Greek writer and orator during the Roman Empire from 117 or 129-181 onwards. He studied rhetoric under Herodes Atticus and others, and wrote and gave speeches in Asia Minor. His representative work, the Ode to Rome, praises the ingenuity of the Roman Empire's ruling structure from the standpoint of the provincial people, while the Sacred Logos records a prophecy from Asclepius, the god of healing, whom he visited, and conveys one aspect of the medical science of the time. His other works, such as the Athenian Hymn and Rhetoric, are both important works for understanding the society of the time, and were avidly read even during the Byzantine period. [Matsumoto Nobuo]

ローマ帝政期ギリシアの文人，弁論家。ヘロデス･アッティクスなどに修辞を学び，小アジアで著述と演説を行った。代表的作品《ローマ頌詩》は属州民の立場からローマ帝国支配構造の巧みさを讃え，《聖なるロゴス》は彼が参詣した治癒神アスクレピオスのお告げをしるし，当時の医術の一断面を伝える。その他《アテナイ讃歌》《修辞学》など，いずれも当時の社会を知るうえでも重要な著述で，ビザンティン時代にも愛読された。【松本宣郎】
