Yoshiyuki Hagino

Japanese: 萩野由之 - はぎのよしゆき
Yoshiyuki Hagino

A scholar of Japanese history and literature. Born in Sado Province (Niigata Prefecture). Graduated from the Department of Classics at the University of Tokyo. Doctor of Literature. Professor at Tokyo Imperial University. In 1887 (Meiji 20), he published Kokugaku Waka Kairyōron (National Learning Waka Reform Theory), co-authored with Konakamura (Ikebe) Yoshikata, which presented a concrete plan for the reform of waka poetry. In April 1889, he published Waka o Ronzu (Discussion on Waka) in Keisei Hyoron (Economic Review), in which he argued for the improvement of waka literature, which he considered to be superior to shintai poetry, and thus sparked the discussion of waka reform in the early Meiji period. In 1916 (Taisho 5), he became a member of the Imperial Academy. He is the author of numerous historical books, including Lectures on Japanese History, and commentaries on the Hōjōki.
