An extremely small book. In the West, it is called a miniature book or bijou book. There are no strict regulations, but in Japan it refers to something that is roughly 10 centimeters long and 6 centimeters wide (A7 size) or less, while in the West it refers to something that is roughly 6 centimeters long or less. However, there are also opinions that say that a miniature book should be 4 centimeters long or less. [Isao Imaida and Fukujiro Yagi] Japanese Miniature BooksThe origins of miniature books in Japan date back as far as the Edo period. Most were made for women and girls, and were mostly printed using woodblock printing, although at the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period some were printed using copperplate printing. At the time, they were also called "Keshibon" or "Hinabon." Although some people had been making miniature books before the Second World War, the catalyst for today's popularity was the launch of Ezo Mamehon in Sapporo in 1953 (Showa 28) after the war. The publisher's founder, Sato Yoshiro, was originally from the Otaru Newspaper Company and was well versed in editing and printing. He worked with members of Takei Takeo Publishing Works (known as Takei Mamehon at the time) to publish stylish miniature books measuring 9cm in height and 7cm in width four times a year. After the war, there was a thirst for books, and the birth of a truly miniature book became the object of desire for book lovers. Inspired by this, miniature books named after local areas and other things started to appear all over the country. Most publishers of miniature books are bibliophiles, and with the exception of 1 and 2, none of them do it as their main job. In other words, the fun of miniature books is that they are not published for profit. Most publishers operate on a membership basis, whereby if you pay a yearly membership fee in advance, you will receive a miniature book several times a year. Membership is usually around 300 people, with some limiting membership to 100 people and others having more than 700. For those who cannot become members, there are now specialized stores that sell miniature books. These stores sell extra copies that publishers have produced in-house in addition to the number of members, or they sell single-volume miniature books that are published from time to time. There are also stores in Tokyo that sell only Western miniature books. According to the Gendai Mamehon Catalogue published by Kotsu Mamehon (Nihon Kosho Tsushinsha, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), by August 1981 (Showa 56), there were over 60 publishers of regularly published miniature books for members (miniature book series) (though no survey has been conducted since 1981). In addition to "Ezo Mamehon," other famous miniature book series that have already ceased publication or are no longer in publication include "Echizen Mamehon" (Fukui Prefecture, Aoki Takashi), "Furyu Mamehon" (Tokyo, Iwasa Toichiro), "Akashi Mamehon" (Hyogo Prefecture, Lamp no Kai), "Kyushu Mamehon" (Oita Prefecture, Mizutani Mamoru), "Nagoya Mamehon" (Aichi Prefecture, Kameyama Iwao), "Michinoku Mamehon" (Yamagata Prefecture, Sato Kotaro), and "Tanabe Mamehon" (Wakayama Prefecture, Yoshida Yazaemon). Miniature books became popular in Europe around the 16th century, and their contents mainly consisted of digests of the Bible. In the 17th century, they were replaced by the works of Shakespeare. In terms of both the bookbinding and the number of strokes in type, Western-style books are more suitable for miniature books. Publication is popular in England, France, Germany, Hungary and Russia. "Ari" (Ant), published in June 1980 by Hoshino Asao (Bijubuk Hoshino), is 1.4 millimeters square and contains the children's songs "Ari" and "Kisha" (Train) by Wakayama Bokusui on 20 pages. It was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's smallest miniature book, but in March 1985, Gleniffer Press of Scotland published "Old King Cole", a miniature book measuring 1 millimeter square, and it lost its title. きわめて小型の本。欧米ではミニアチュア・ブックminiature bookまたはビジュー・ブックbijou bookとよぶ。厳格な規定があるわけではなく、日本ではだいたい縦10センチメートル・横6センチメートル(A7判)以下のものをいい、欧米ではだいたい縦6センチメートル以下のものをよんでいる。これに対し、豆本というからには縦4センチメートル以下にするべきだという意見もある。 [今井田勲・八木福次郎] 日本の豆本日本における豆本の発生は、遠く江戸時代にさかのぼり、おおかたは婦女子向きにつくられたもので、木版印刷が多く、幕末・明治初期には銅版印刷のものもあった。当時は芥子(けし)本、雛(ひな)本ともよばれていた。 第二次世界大戦前にも一部の人の間で豆本がつくられてはいたが、今日の隆盛をみるに至ったきっかけは、戦後の1953年(昭和28)札幌で創刊された『ゑぞ・まめほん』にある。主宰者佐藤与四郎は小樽(おたる)新聞社の出身で、編集、印刷に精通し、『武井武雄刊本作品』(当時は武井豆本とよばれていた)の会員と図り、縦9センチメートル・横7センチメートルの瀟洒(しょうしゃ)な豆本を年4回刊行した。戦後、書物に飢えを感じていたおりから、豆本らしい豆本の誕生は愛書家の垂涎(すいぜん)の的となり、これに触発されて全国各地でその地方名などを冠した豆本が続出した。 豆本の版元は愛書趣味の人が多く、1、2の例外を除いて、これを本業としている人はいない。つまり営利出版でないところに豆本の楽しさがあるといえる。ほとんどが会員制をとっており、年会費を先払いしておけば、年に数回豆本が送られてくる仕組みになっている。会員は300人程度が普通で、なかには100人限定というところもあれば、700人を超えているところもある。 会員になれない人のために、豆本を扱う専門店もできている。版元が会員数のほかに自家版として余分に製作したものを回してもらったり、随時に刊行される単行豆本を扱っている。また東京には西洋豆本のみを扱う専門店もできている。『古通豆本』(東京都千代田区・日本古書通信社)刊行の『現代豆本書目』によれば、1981年(昭和56)8月までに定期的に発行された会員制豆本(シリーズ豆本)の版元は60を超えていた(81年以降の調査は行われていない)。 すでに終刊または休刊となった著名なシリーズ豆本には『ゑぞ・まめほん』のほか、『えちぜん豆本』(福井県・青木隆)、『風流豆本』(東京都・岩佐東一郎)、『あかし豆本』(兵庫県・らんぷの会)、『九州豆本』(大分県・水谷護(まもる))、『名古屋豆本』(愛知県・亀山巌(いわお))、『みちのく豆本』(山形県・佐藤公太郎)、『田奈部豆本』(和歌山県・吉田弥左衛門)などがある。 [今井田勲・八木福次郎] 世界の豆本欧米でも豆本の出版や収集が盛んである。ヨーロッパでは16世紀ごろから豆本が流行し、内容は主として聖書のダイジェストであった。17世紀になるとシェークスピアの作品がそれにかわる。造本上からいっても活字の画数からいっても洋装本のほうが豆本向きである。イギリス、フランス、ドイツ、それにハンガリーとロシアでの刊行が盛んである。 星野麻夫(びじゅぶっく・ほしの)が1980年6月に刊行した1.4ミリメートル平方の『蟻(あり)』は、若山牧水(ぼくすい)の童謡「蟻」と「汽車」を20ページに収録している。世界最小豆本としてギネス・ブックに登載されたが、1985年3月にスコットランドのグレニファープレス社から『オールド・キング・コール』という1ミリメートル平方の豆本が出版されて世界最小の座を降りた。 [今井田勲・八木福次郎] 『今井田勲著『私の稀覯本 豆本とその周辺』(1976・丸ノ内出版)』 出典 小学館 日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)日本大百科全書(ニッポニカ)について 情報 | 凡例 |
