Wieser, Friedrich Freiherr von
Born: July 10, 1851 in Vienna
[Died] July 22, 1926. Salzburg, St. Gilgen. Austrian economist and sociologist. After studying law and history at the University of Vienna, he switched to theoretical economics under the influence of C. Menger, and studied under K. Knies, W. Roscher, and B. Hildebrand at the Universities of Heidelberg, Jena, and Leipzig. In 1903, he became a professor at the University of Vienna. He served as Minister of Commerce during World War I, and returned to the University of Vienna after the war. He was one of the leading proponents of the subjective theory of value, and is known for formulating the attribution theory, which extends Menger's marginal utility theory into a theory for determining the value of production factors. In sociology, he predicted today's mass society. His major works include Der natural Value (1889), Theorie der gesellschaftlichen Wirtschaft (1914), and Das Gesetz der Macht (26).
