Haemanthus - Haemanthus

Japanese:
Haemanthus - Haemanthus

A general term for the genus Haemanthus, Amaryllidaceae (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae). Native to South Africa and tropical Africa, about 60 species are known. In gardening, it is a bulbous plant planted in the spring, and is generally cultivated in greenhouses in winter. Several species are well known in Japan, including Mayuhake-omoto (eyebrow brush evergreen) H. albiflos Jacq., which has beautiful evergreen, tongue-shaped leaves with 2-4 leaves, 15-20 cm long, 7-10 cm wide, and somewhat fleshy. Around October, it produces a flower stalk about 10 cm long, with an umbel at the tip that is densely covered with small white flowers. The white, thread-like stamens and perianth pieces look like eyebrow brushes, hence the name. Also, Scadoxus multiflorus (Martyn) Raf. ( H. multiflorus Martyn) has 3-4 leaves, is oblong, 15-30 cm long, thin, and turns yellow in winter. It produces a 30-50 cm flower stalk with a spherical umbel at the tip, about 15 cm in diameter.
