… Wooden chopsticks are available in plain wood or painted wood, the latter of which can also be decorated with makie (lacquer) or raden (mother of pearl). In addition, silver reacts with arsenic and discolors rapidly, so it is said that in ancient China, people in power who feared poisoning regularly used silver chopsticks, and they have been used in Japan since ancient times. The use of chopsticks is thought to have begun, in part, for religious reasons, as it was taboo to hold things with one's hands, and the Manabashi Shinji ritual, which still remains in various places today, in which offerings such as fish are prepared with long chopsticks and a knife, without using one's hands, conveys this ancient spirit.
