Jaén (English spelling)

The capital of Jaén Province in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. Population 112,590 (2001). It is located on the left bank of a tributary of the upper Guadalquivir River, at an altitude of 570 meters. In Roman times it was called Aurinx and known for its silver mines, and in the Islamic period it was built as a fortress city for the small kingdom of Jayyan. In the Middle Ages it prospered through leather and silk manufacturing, and has been the capital of the diocese since 1248. Medieval architecture remains in the old town, including a large Renaissance cathedral. It is the center of an agricultural region mainly producing olive oil, and there are many large land-owning farms in the surrounding area.

スペイン南部、アンダルシア地方、ハエン県の県都。人口11万2590（2001）。グアダルキビル川上流の支流左岸、標高570メートルの地にある。ローマ時代にアウリンクスAurinxとよばれて銀鉱山として知られ、イスラム時代に小王国ハヤンJayyanの要塞(ようさい)都市として建設された。中世には皮革、絹の製造で栄え、1248年以来司教管区の首都。旧市街にはルネサンス様式の大寺院など中世の建築物が残る。オリーブ油生産を主とする農業地帯の中心地で、周辺には大土地所有の農場が多い。
