The capital of Jaén Province in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. Population 112,590 (2001). It is located on the left bank of a tributary of the upper Guadalquivir River, at an altitude of 570 meters. In Roman times it was called Aurinx and known for its silver mines, and in the Islamic period it was built as a fortress city for the small kingdom of Jayyan. In the Middle Ages it prospered through leather and silk manufacturing, and has been the capital of the diocese since 1248. Medieval architecture remains in the old town, including a large Renaissance cathedral. It is the center of an agricultural region mainly producing olive oil, and there are many large land-owning farms in the surrounding area.
