Christian bishop, poet, and saint. Born into the aristocratic senatorial class of Gallia, he became governor of Campania in Italy (381) under the guidance and friendship of the older poet Ausonius. In 384 he returned to Gaul and married a wealthy Spanish woman called Therasia, but after family tragedies and other events he was baptized as a Christian and traveled to Spain in 389. In 395 he moved with Therasia to Nola in Campania, where he became a monk guarding the shrine of St. Felix, a local martyr, and was ordained bishop of Nola in 409 after Therasia's death.

キリスト教司教，詩人，聖人。ガリアの元老院貴族層の出身。同階層の年長の詩人アウソニウスの指導と親交を得，イタリアのカンパニア州総督となる(381)。384年ガリアに帰還，スペイン出身の富裕な婦人テラシアと結婚したが，家族の悲劇などから389年キリスト教の洗礼を受けてスペインに行き，さらに395年テラシアとともにカンパニアのノラNolaに移り，その地の殉教者聖フェリクスの祠を守る修道士となり，テラシアの死後，409年ノラの司教に叙任された。
