"Iku" means "life" and refers to the vigor of vitality. "Musu" means "birth", and "moss musu" means to multiply, and "bi" means "hi", meaning spiritual power, and may be related to the day of the sun. "Musubi" indicates that ancient Japanese people perceived various spiritual powers and forces (functions) as sacred. "Ikutama-no-kami" was worshiped by mikannagi (shrine priests) as one of the gods worshipped at the Hasshinden Shrine of the Jingikan along with Kamimusubi-no-kami, Takamimusubi-no-kami, and Tarumusubi-no-kami, and was one of the gods who participated in the requiem ceremony to appease the soul of the emperor or promote vitality. 生産日,生産霊とも書く。物を活発に産み出す霊力のこと。また,人間の生命を活発に栄えさせる霊力のこと。イクは活で生命力の盛んなさまをいう。ムスは産で,苔ムスというように繁殖する意,ビはヒで霊力の意で太陽の日とも関係があろう。ムスビとは,古く日本人がさまざまな霊威,威力(働き)を神聖なものと感得したことを示す。〈生魂神〉は,御巫(みかんなぎ)によって神産日(かみむすび)神,高御産日(たかみむすび)神,足産日(たるむすび)神などとともに,神祇官の八神殿奉斎神としてまつられ,天皇の魂を鎮め,あるいは活力の促進を祈る鎮魂祭にあずかる神々の一神であった。
