It was pasted on lanterns and statues of Nio ( guardian deities) as a talisman against smallpox. ※Storybook, Kotoba no Hana (1797), Mizuuri: "You probably don't have a lantern ready. Go buy some red paper."② Red paper pasted on urgent letters. ※Reading book, Kappo Ichidai Banashi (1794), 5: "He grabbed a number of Japanese documents from the chest of drawers, and gradually lined up the ones with red papers and those with red papers attached."③ = Akashinbun (red newspaper) ※Hinobashira (1904), Kinoshita Naoe, 12: "At some point, Umeko's gaze fell on the third page of the red paper that was unfolded on the desk."④ (Due to the use of red paper) Originally a colloquial name for a military conscription notice. ※Yumesei War Diary〈Tokugawa Musei〉 October 22, 1943 (Showa 18) “Today, director Yoshimura Kozaburo suddenly received a red paper.” ⑤ A slang term for a notice of seizure.
