Paulinus (of Pella)

A nobleman from Burdigala (now Bordeaux) in Gaul, circa 376-460. Grandson of Ausonius. After a wealthy and well-educated youth, he suffered hardships and lost his fortune among the Vandals, Visigoths, and Alans who invaded Gaul, and fled to Greece (Pella in Macedonia). In 459, at the age of 83, he wrote his autobiography in 616 lines of hexagram rhyme, titled Diary. It vividly describes the situation of the collapse of the Roman Empire at that time, but he still maintained his faith in Christianity.

ガリアのブルディガラ(現，ボルドー)の貴族。アウソニウスの孫。富裕のうちに教養を身につけた少青年期のあと，ガリアに侵入したバンダル，西ゴート，アラン諸部族のなかにあって苦労し，財産を失い，ギリシア(マケドニアのペラPella)に逃れた。459年，83歳の高齢で616行の六脚韻での自叙伝を《日記》として著した。そこには当時のローマ帝国崩壊の状況が生き生きと記されているが，なおキリスト教への信仰を保持している。
