A nobleman from Burdigala (now Bordeaux) in Gaul, circa 376-460. Grandson of Ausonius. After a wealthy and well-educated youth, he suffered hardships and lost his fortune among the Vandals, Visigoths, and Alans who invaded Gaul, and fled to Greece (Pella in Macedonia). In 459, at the age of 83, he wrote his autobiography in 616 lines of hexagram rhyme, titled Diary. It vividly describes the situation of the collapse of the Roman Empire at that time, but he still maintained his faith in Christianity. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
