Tokutan Castle

Japanese: 徳丹城 - とくたんじょう

A castle fortification from the Heian period located in Yahaba-cho, Shiwa -gun, Iwate Prefecture. Nationally designated historic site. In 803 (Enryaku 22), Shiwa Castle (Morioka City), built slightly north of here by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro , suffered heavy damage from the flooding of the Shizukuishi River. As a result, at the suggestion of Tamuramaro's successor as Shogun, Funya no Watamaro , it was decided to build a new castle fortification here, about 10 km south of Shiwa Castle. Shiwa Castle was dismantled and relocated, and it was completed in 811 (Kōnin 2). The outer wall of Tokutan Castle is smaller than Shiwa Castle, measuring about 350 square meters, but the remains of the government buildings remain, indicating that the political functions of Shiwa Castle were inherited in their entirety. Currently, it has been developed as a historic park, and the park is home to the Yahaba Town History and Folklore Museum, the Nambu Magariya House, etc. It is about a 5-minute drive from JR Tohoku Main Line Yahaba Station.

岩手県紫波(しわ)郡矢巾(やはば)町にあった平安時代の城柵。国指定史跡。803年（延暦22）に、坂上田村麻呂(さかのうえのたむらまろ)により、これよりやや北に造営された志波城（盛岡市）が雫石川の氾濫で大きな被害を受けたため、田村麻呂の後任の征夷大将軍文室綿麻呂(ふんやのわたまろ)の建議により、志波城より約10km南の当地に新たな城柵として建設することが決まり、志波城を解体・移築して811年（弘仁2）に完成した。徳丹城の外郭は約350m四方と志波城よりも規模は小さいが、官衙の建物群の跡も残り、志波城の政治機能がそっくり引き継がれたことを物語っている。現在は史跡公園として整備され、公園内には矢巾町歴史民俗資料館、南部曲り家なども併設されている。JR東北本線矢幅駅から車で約5分。
