[Born] Around 1812 [Died] December 17, 1833 in Ansbach In May 1828, a boy of unknown origins, barely able to speak, was taken in by the city authorities of Nuremberg, Germany. According to the accompanying letter, he was born on October 7, 1812, was the son of a cavalry officer, and was named Kaspar. He was initially taken in by the educator G. Daumer, but was injured in October 1829 after being attacked by someone. He then moved to Ansbach and became a clerk for the President of the Court of Appeal A. Feuerbach, but died from a second injury. At the time, newspapers and magazines reported that he was the son of Duke Karl Ludwig of Baden and the heir to Baden, but that the duke's widow had tried to kill him so that her own child could succeed him. This bizarre story stimulated literary imagination and gave rise to many works, including P. Verlaine's poem "Sagesse" (1881), novels by J. Wasserman and others, and plays by E. Ebermaier and P. Handke. Hauser |
