A Shingaku scholar of the mid-to-late Edo period. The fourth son of Shiga Morimoto of Imada-i, Kanzaki County, Omi Province (Yokaichi City, Shiga Prefecture). His given name was Shoyo, commonly known as Ganzo, his pen name was Kotaka, and his pen names were Kisui and Tokai. At the age of 20, he went to Kyoto and became a disciple of Teshima Toan, who adopted him and succeeded the branch family, Kamikawa. In 1791 (Kansei 3), he succeeded his brother-in-law Teshima Kazuan, became the third head of Meirinsha in Kyoto, and presided over the Sekimon Shingaku movement throughout the country. 江戸中・後期の心学者。近江国神崎郡今田居(滋賀県八日市市)の志賀盛言の4男。名は正揚,通称愿蔵,字は子鷹,号は淇水,東海。20歳のとき京都に出て手島堵庵の門に入り,その養子となり分家上河家を継ぐ。寛政3(1791)年義兄手島和庵を継承し,京都の明倫舎第3世舎主となり,全国の石門心学運動を主宰する。自ら諸国に赴き講話し門弟の指導に当たり,また心学講舎の設立や心学教義の確立に尽力する。<著作>『心学承伝之図』,『聖賢証語国字解』<参考文献>石川謙『石門心学の研究』,同『近世日本社会教育史の研究』
