Far East Clause

Japanese: 極東条項 - きょくとうじょうこう

Article 6 of the new Japan-US Security Treaty was signed in January 1960. It states that US forces are permitted to use Japanese facilities and areas "in order to contribute to the security of Japan and to the maintenance of international peace and security in the Far East." The opposition parties demanded that this Far East clause be deleted, on the grounds that it could involve Japan in conflicts in the Far East that are not directly related to Japan's security. In addition, the government's vague response regarding the scope of the Far East was criticized by the Liberal Democratic Party and the public for provoking China and the Soviet Union.
