731‐788 Founder of the Later Umayyad Caliphate. Reigned 756-788. His grandfather was Hisham, the 10th caliph of the Umayyad dynasty. After the fall of the Umayyad dynasty in 750, he fled to North Africa, crossed over to Spain in 756 and established the Later Umayyad Caliphate in Cordoba, where he laid the foundations of the dynasty by quelling Berber rebellions and rebellions orchestrated by the Abbasid Caliphate. His battle with Charlemagne over the possession of Zaragoza is sung in the medieval European epic poem The Song of Roland.
