Umoreougigani - Umoreougigani

This crab belongs to the order Decapoda, class Crustacea, and family Xanthomonas. It is a large species with a carapace width of up to 10 centimeters, and is widely distributed over coral reefs in the Western Pacific Ocean south of Amami Oshima and the Indian Ocean, living in gaps in the reef flats. The carapace is fan-shaped. The carapace surface is divided into numerous sections, has a ceramic-like luster, and is scaly. There are four teeth on the front edge of the carapace, but the front three are round and plate-like. The upper edge of the palm of the claws and the front edges of the walking legs are also plate-like. In some areas, a powerful paralyzing poison is stored in the muscles, and eating it can cause fatal food poisoning.

節足動物門甲殻綱十脚(じっきゃく)目オウギガニ科に属するカニ。甲幅10センチメートルに達する大形種で、奄美(あまみ)大島以南の西太平洋、インド洋のサンゴ礁に広く分布し、礁原のすきまにすんでいる。甲は扇形。甲面は多数の甲域に細分され、陶器様の光沢があり、鱗(うろこ)状を呈する。甲の前側縁には4歯あるが、前3歯は丸く、板状。はさみ脚(あし)の掌部(しょうぶ)上縁、歩脚の前縁も板状。地方によっては、筋肉中に強力な麻痺(まひ)性の毒成分が蓄えられていることがあり、食べると致死的な食中毒をおこすことがある。
