An evergreen shrub of the Pinaceae family, native to the alpine zone from central Honshu northward. In addition to Japan, it is also found in the northern Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, Kamchatka, Siberia, the Korean Peninsula, etc. The trunk grows prostrate on the ground, and the dense leaves are 6cm long and arranged in clusters of 5. It is monoecious and flowers bloom in June. The cones are ovoid, about 5cm long, and the seeds are triangular obovate, wingless, and edible. They often form large colonies in the alpine zone.
