Corneille Jean François Heymans

Belgian physiologist and pharmacologist. After graduating from the University of Ghent (Gand) in 1920, he traveled around Europe and the United States, and became a professor of pharmacology at his alma mater in 1930. He recognized that there are chemical receptors in the carotid sinus and aorta that respond to changes in the partial pressure of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood, and to changes in blood pressure, and reflexively regulate breathing. In 1938, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of carotid sinus and aortic reflexes. He has served in important international positions, including as president of the International Physiological Society and the International Pharmacological Society, a WHO pharmacology expert committee member, and has received many awards from governments, academic societies, and universities both in Japan and abroad.
