A city in southwestern Connecticut, USA, facing the Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Norwalk River. Population 82,951 (2000). As a suburban city of New York City, various industries have developed since ancient times, with clothing, electronic and electrical equipment, food, and aircraft-related companies prominently located in the city. There are also many small islands dotted within the harbor, which attract many vacationers, especially in the summer. The town was founded in 1650 after land was purchased from the natives. During the War of Independence, the town was burned down by the British army, but in 1913 it merged with neighboring towns and villages and saw great development.
