Norwalk - Norwalk (English spelling)

A city in southwestern Connecticut, USA, facing the Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Norwalk River. Population 82,951 (2000). As a suburban city of New York City, various industries have developed since ancient times, with clothing, electronic and electrical equipment, food, and aircraft-related companies prominently located in the city. There are also many small islands dotted within the harbor, which attract many vacationers, especially in the summer. The town was founded in 1650 after land was purchased from the natives. During the War of Independence, the town was burned down by the British army, but in 1913 it merged with neighboring towns and villages and saw great development. Silvermine Village in the city is famous as a place where many artists gather.

アメリカ合衆国、コネティカット州南西部、ノーウォーク川河口ロング・アイランド海峡に臨む都市。人口8万2951（2000）。ニューヨーク市の郊外都市として古くから各種工業の発達がみられ、衣料、電子・電気機器、食品、航空機関連企業の立地が目だつ。また、港内に数多くの小島が点在し、とくに夏季には多くの行楽客を集める。先住民から土地を購入し1650年に町が建設された。独立戦争時にはイギリス軍の手によって町が全焼したが、1913年には近隣町村を合併し大きな発展をみた。市内にあるシルバーマイン・ビレッジは、芸術家が多く集まる所として有名である。
